Travis Rieder said he was given the drugs without any real plan.
Family time is something that Rieder does not take for granted. The Johns Hopkins University bioethics professor soaks up every moment he can with his wife, Sadiye, and 3-year-old daughter, Sinem, because, prescription opioids stole a chapter of his life two years ago.
“I just stopped moving and stopped eating and just stayed on the couch, basically,” Rieder said.
A serious motorcycle accident in 2015 left Rieder with a crushed foot. He would have six surgeries to fix it, including a transplant from his thigh that required large amounts of pain medication.
